God Almighty
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty ; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”
Genesis 17:1-2 NIV
HIGHLIGHT: The original Hebrew of “God Almighty” is “El Shaddai,” which speaks of God’s ultimate power over everything. It also means that He is the all-sufficient God who pours His blessings continually. Therefore, when we say, “God Almighty”, we proclaim and believe in God’s mighty power and sustenance.
What would you do when someone promised you something, and it took him more than a year doing what he promised? Would you forget it or run after that person? While most of the time, we are ruled by our impatience, Abram waited faithfully for about ten years for a promised son, since they were childless. However, his wife can’t wait for God’s promise any longer, so they manipulated the situation to get their promise. Just like them, how many times did we chose to get things our way?
Despite their disobedience, the promised remain. When Abram was 99 years old, God appeared to Abram and greeted him by saying, “I am God Almighty.” The original Hebrew of “God Almighty” is “El Shaddai,” which speaks of God’s ultimate power over everything. It also means that He is the all-sufficient God who pours His blessings continually. God is telling Abram that He is powerful. He is his provider, and that He can fulfill His promise.
God, being true to His word, gave Abram and Sarai their son when they were 100 years old. It wasn’t an ideal age to bear a son, but God went beyond the impossible with His mighty power. God showed them that He is powerful, and He is their sustainer.
Because our God is mighty, nothing is impossible with Him. Your problems, your fears, and your concerns are not too big for Him. Therefore, when we say, “God Almighty,” we proclaim and believe in God’s mighty power and sustenance.
